The weight of thirty years

A client in Burlington knew exactly which house she wanted next. She could not start, because the basement held thirty years she had never had to look at.

She knew exactly which house she wanted next. She had known for two years. She still had not called anyone.

The problem was the basement. Thirty years of it. Boxes she had not opened since the move in, her children's school things, furniture that came from her mother, the contents of a workshop her husband had used every weekend until he could not. She would go down the stairs, stand there, and come back up.

This is the part nobody warns people about. It is not the market that stops a move, and it is not interest rates. It is standing at the bottom of the stairs.

Why doing it yourself rarely works

The usual advice is to start small. One box a week, one room a month. It sounds sensible and it almost never holds, because every single object is a decision, and most of the decisions have feelings attached. An hour in, you are not sorting any more. You are sitting on the floor with a photo album.

People give up and conclude they are not ready. They were ready. They were just alone with it.

What I do instead

I bring in professional move managers who do this every week. They are not sentimental about your belongings and they are not rushing you either. They work room by room, and the only question they put to you is the one that matters: does this come with you.

What stays goes to the new home. What has value can be sold. What someone else can use goes to a local charity. The rest is removed responsibly. You are not asked to lift anything, and you are not asked to do it alone.

She moved that autumn. The house sold afterwards, empty and at its best. What she said to me later was not about the price. It was that she wished she had called two years earlier.
